Shot at P59: Rachel Perry Welty for Vogue US December

For the December issue of Vogue US, conceptual artist Rachel Perry Welty appears with some of Fall’s hottest printed accessories in an editorial titled “Quick-Change Artist.” The thing is, it’s hard to put your eye on Welty as she sometimes blends right into the printed background surrounding her. The images, which are similar to her Lost in my Life series, are refreshing in an odd way. Our eyes dance all over the page but we know exactly what we are looking at: a Balenciaga by Nicholas Ghesquière python and linen handbag, a Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci oversize shopper, a Prada floral golf bag. It’s the gentle assault of prints in the images that sometimes make the accessories pop even more.

Photographer Steven Pan and stylist Elissa Santisi worked with Welty to help create these captivating images. And the sets? Where do we begin! Welty actually designed them herself and Andy Harman, set designer, assisted in bringing them to life. We know how hectic it can be building just one setup, so we have to give major props to Welty for designing and executing multiple scenarios in such a short period of time.

We think Miranda Priestly would be pleased. How, so? They’re showing florals for Fall! Make sure you pick up this month’s Vogue US with Charlize Theron on the cover to dissect this editorial up close.

Shot at P59 West: Tyra Banks for I Love You Magazine

Back in November, we blogged about media mogul Tyra Banks on the cover of I Love You magazineshot at Pier59 Digital Studios West and now we can share the editorial! Whether on the streets of Santa Monica or inside our studio, AFG Management photographer, Marc Gaab, captures Tyra sporting incredible garments and accessories. Pieces include a Marc Jacobs cardigan and Emporio Armani jumpsuit to necklaces by Yves Saint Laurent and Patricia von Musulin. While lounging on a motorcycle, she channels the ultimate good-girl-turned-bad-girl-turned-good girl: Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy character from Grease. Albeit, a super sexy Sandy but still! Continue on to see the America’s Next Top Model host and judge do what the show’s contestants strive to do.

Shot at P59: Marcus Gaab for the Wall Street Journal

AFG Management photographer, Marcus Gaab, teamed up with The Wall Street Journal for an interesting take on shooting an accessories story titled “Pump Up the Volume.” While the images are great as stills, Gaab takes it a step further and gets interactive. First, let’s take a look model Bojana and accessories by Reed Krakoff, Roberto Cavalli, Celine and more shot here in Studio 7.

Gryson Takes Us to St. Barth’s For Spring 2012

The first handbag Joy Gryson designed was a 6 oz. leather mini shoulder bag and she loved it. Unfortunately, she doesn’t think it ever went into production. As she recalls its design, she says how it would be perfect for the times. “It was at Coach. Square, classic, and mini,” Gryson says.

The designer moved on to work in the Men’s Accessories division at Calvin Klein where she met her husband. She then wound up at Marc Jacobs, eventually becoming Director of Design and Development for the brand’s Handbags and Accessories division. While in that position, she gave birth to her daughter and found herself losing quality time with her newborn. “I was traveling extensively to Italy, and during the month before runway shows, I was focused on working. [I] needed to figure out how to balance work with home,” Gryson says. This is when she decided to launch her own brand, simply titled Gryson.

After taking a trip to St. Barth’s, Gryson found her inspiration for her Spring 2012 collection. The French sophistication and vivid colors of St. Barth’s were merged with the urban realities of downtown New York City and the artistic flair of TriBeCa. “The color palette was definitely a big move for Gryson this season, probably being one of the most colorful seasons of it’s existence,” Gryson says. The collection includes tomato reds, golds, oranges, blue-greens and purples.

Texture stayed an important message throughout this collection. “You are touching your bags 50 times a day. I believe you should enjoy the use of bags through all of your senses just as you enjoy the sun, the beach, the water,” Gryson says.

Selected materials for the Spring collection include nubuk suedes which are commonly seen as a Fall leather. Gryson simply brushed the surface a bit more and married it with her Spring color choice resulting in a softer look and feel. Speaking of soft, she is quite fond of smooth calfskins. “[They are] so soft, they feel like the white sand beneath your feet.”

Now, we don’t know about you but we’ll talk a handbag that reminds us of the white sands of St. Barth’s any day. For more, click over to the official Gryson website now.
