A GREAT CAUSE TO SUPPORT!

We have been getting several requests from people wanting to learn more about the cause we are raising money for so we have put together a little something to give you more details.

In a sport dominated by affluent suburban schools, inner city students at schools like Beach Channel High School have typically not had a chance to compete for lacrosse titles. But thanks to the pioneering effort by coach Sam Innes, the girls at Beach Channel have quickly catapulted to the top of New York State lacrosse. Begun just three years ago, the team is made up of low-income area Queens students who have chosen to devote their time to schoolwork and athletics instead of the gang activity that plagues their neighborhoods. This year, on a shoestring budget and with lots of hard work, the team upset a perennial winner to win the New York City championship!

In addition to being a great outlet for these talented athletes, lacrosse provides these girls with a golden opportunity -- a chance to earn college scholarships. Yet, earning scholarships requires exposure in front of college coaches at expensive summer lacrosse camps and fall tournaments, and if these students can’t pay for camp, they’ll simply be overlooked.

That’s where you come in. Pier 59 Studios will be raising money for The Beach Channel Lacrosse Team. Your bid will help Beach Channel’s girls attend fall recruiting tournaments, which are a necessary bridge from high school to college lacrosse programs. Your bid will help a low-income student show that they can play with the best, if only given a fair chance.

As minorities in the sport of lacrosse, the team has faced many hurdles and we are excited to be able to help support this talented group of girls as they break barriers and make history in the game of lacrosse.
