In 1999 seminal, German publisher Taschen, produced a 66-pound, 464-page monograph of Helmut Newton’s work, unprecedented in proportion, weight or cost, entitled Sumo. A limited edition of 10,000, Sumo was signed by Newton himself and came with a $15,000 Philippe-Starck-designed stand. To commemorate the ten year anniversary, Taschen will release a decidedly smaller version of Sumo in September, with an exhibition of photographs from its pages.
If you find yourself in Berlin, you can attend the commemorative exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation to view the 394 photographs for the first time (unless you are one of the well-heeled owners of a copy of Sumo – now a much sought after collector’s item).
Also on display, in a celebration of mentorship will be Three Boys from Pasadena. Mark Arbeit, George Holz and Just Loomis met Helmut in 1979 while students at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. They went on to all become assistants of Helmut’s during the most prolific and exciting period in his career.
25 pieces of each of their works, edited and selected by Helmut’s wife, June Newton will also be on display at the Helmut Newton Foundation in tribute to the ten year anniversary.
